VERY RARE – Revolutionary War Tinder Pouch, ca. 1730–1780

$365.00

Product Description

This is an 18th century, ca.1730-1780, tinder pouch or “chukmuk”. It is made of leather with a brass closure and a compartment for the flint, measuring 4” x 2 ¾”. The steel striker is riveted along the bottom. This example has brass design on the flap, a brass ring and handle on top edge, and brass closure on the flap. They originated in China and disseminated throughout Europe and the America colonies by traders and travelers.

They are shown in “Early American Antique Country Furnishings” by George Neumann (see pictures). The leather has slightly hardened because of its age but can still be opened. It may be able to be treated to soften the leather. This is only the second tinder receptacle of this style that I have owned or even seen.  It comes in the glass top display case pictured, along with the flint.

With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in the Revolutionary War and its relics is significantly increasing. This renewed enthusiasm will drive demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.

I am witnessing a notable uptick in purchases of these items, which reflects the growing celebrations for the anniversary year and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
