Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an original package of Civil War tobacco. It is marked “QUEEN OF THE WEST / JAMES RIVER / SWEET LEAF / TOBACCO”. “Manufactured by / H.L. Tickner & Co. / Anoka. / Minn.”. It is complete with the tobacco still remaining on the inside.

In Time Life's “ECHOES OF GLORY ; Arms & Equipment of the Union”, there is an identical example of this tobacco (see pictures). Also, there is one displayed in Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum and Visitors Center and another identical example in their museum collection (see pictures).

During the Civil War, soldiers from both sides made extensive use of tobacco, even those who never used it, started to do so when they joined the military. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I discuss in detail about tobacco use (see pictures).

Although well over 150 years old, the printing is still very legible, mainly because it was stored away, so it had no effect on the paper and contents. This is something that is nearly impossible to find – something like tobacco would just be used up, not saved. This is so rare; I doubt you will find another. It would make a great addition to a display of a soldier’s personal effects.
