This is another nice item being offered, it is a regulation Civil War Union Cavalry Horse Bridle Bit. It measures 9” x 5 ½” with one of the original “US” brass bosses remaining. This bit was recovered many years on the east side of Gettysburg (see map).
Union cavalry played a critical role on the first and third days of the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 1st, Brigadier General John Buford's dismounted cavalry delayed Confederate infantry until Union reinforcements arrived, while on July 3rd, General David Gregg's cavalry defended the Union army's flank against Confederate cavalry led by J.E.B. Stuart on East Cavalry Field. General George Custer was also present and commanded a brigade of Michigan cavalry, which supported Gregg's forces in the July 3rd engagement.
For being dug, this bit remains in very nice condition – overall surface rust, but no chipping or flaking, seldom you find them in this condition. It would go great in any Cavalry or Civil War collection.
