This is another nice piece being offered, it is a dug section of an Enfield socket bayonet measuring 7 ½” long. Bayonets were attached to a rifle, giving close quarters weapons an extra-long reach. This example was recovered in a Confederate camp at Herr’s Ridge, Gettysburg (see map).
The fighting at Herr's Ridge was one of the first actions of the Battle of Gettysburg, in which Confederate generals James Archer and Joseph Davis captured Herr's Ridge from the Union army and defeated John Buford's cavalry.
This piece along with several other Gettysburg items, were acquired from Don Stoops in the 1990s. He was the owner of the “Sharpsburg Arsenal” at Antietam. This is a very nice solid piece.
