Revolutionary war soldiers Side Knife, ca. 1750-1780, as in books

Being offered is an 18^th century side or belt knife. It has an iron ferrel and the blade was made from an old file (faint file marks can still be seen). It has a maple handle and measures 9 3/4” overall, with a 5” blade.

Side knives during the Revolutionary War were versatile, personal tools used primarily for camp utility, cooking, and close-quarters combat. Often carried by soldiers and frontiersmen, these fixed-blade knives (sometimes made from repurposed bayonets or files).

They served as essential equipment for cutting food, repairing gear, and clearing brush. Employed for tasks similar to a modern survival knife, such as preparing firewood and building shelter and also served as a backup weapon in close-quarters fighting. These items were as precious to the individual as their weapon, serving practical needs and providing comfort amidst the hardships of war.
