Revolutionary War Soldier’s Snuff Box, as in books

$155.00

Product Description

This is another great early piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War snuff box. It measures 3” x 1 ¾” x 1 ½” and has a thin leather covering and a removable wooden lid with leather tab. Actually, there is some of the old snuff still in it.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries snuff production boomed, far outstripping smoking tobacco (or its American sibling, chewing tobacco). And it was even recommended by doctors as a general cure-all, particularly effective in the treatment of coughs, colds, and headaches.

Many Revolutionary War soldiers (both American and British) carried snuff in their haversacks in containers such as this one, they would wrap it in a handkerchief or sock. In "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution", there is a very similar example (see pictures). It would make a great addition to a display of Revolutionary War soldier’s personal effects.

Revolutionary War artifacts have always been hard to find. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price.
