This is one of those items you rarely come across or even see. It is a hand-forged iron candle spike. It measures 5 ¾” x 4 ½” and the candle socket has a diameter of 1”. This device was ideal for the common soldier; he could bang it into a tree when in the field or into a beam when in the barracks. There are similar examples in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by Neumann & Kravic (see pictures).
The one being offered here is a quality piece, the blacksmith would have to be very skilled to create such a complicated object out of a single piece of iron. This would be a great addition to any Revolutionary War collection, or even a museum. The remains of a period candle is still inside.
