Revolutionary War relics from Crown Point, NY, including an Ox Shoe

This is a nice excavated Revolutionary War grouping being offered. In the 4 ½” x 5 ½” display case are a musket ball, ox shoe, and a small brass buckle. They were dug years ago at Crown Point, NY.

The Continental Army and local militias used oxen during the Revolutionary War to haul heavy supplies, equipment, and provisions to supply the troops. Oxen pulled wagons, carts, and sleds loaded with food, camp gear, and military stores. Armies valued oxen for heavy hauling over rough terrain because they possessed great pulling power and endurance compared to horses.

At the outbreak of the American Revolution, the rebellious colonists looked to Crown Point to aid their cause. The surrender of Fort Crown Point to American rebel troops commanded by Seth Warner in May of 1775 yielded 114 pieces of cannon and heavy ordnance sorely needed by the Americans. Colonel Henry Knox carried twenty-nine of these to Boston during that winter to force the British out of the city. This journey would be impossible without the use of oxen.
