This is another nice piece being offered, it is an 18th century patch knife. It has an overall length of 7” with a 3” blade showing, sharpened on one side. The blade continues through a brass ferrule into the wooden handle. These knives were used for trimming patches of linen that wrapped the musket ball when loading into the musket, this ensured a tight, accurate fit in the barrel.
This was an important tool for 18th century soldiers. In “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by Neumann & Kravic, there are similar examples of these knives (see pictures).
With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in Revolutionary War relics is expected to significantly increase. This renewed enthusiasm will drive demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.
Already, I am witnessing a notable uptick in purchases of these items, which reflects the growing anticipation for the anniversary and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
