This is another early piece coming out of a 60-year collection I am working on, it is a Revolutionary War hand-forged Naval Boarding/Grappling Hook, measuring 6 ½” x 7” with an attached iron ring for a rope or chain.
When used in Naval battles, sailors would throw the three-pronged hook from their ship onto the enemy's, allowing them to follow the movement of the opposing ship, slow its forward motion, and/or pull it closer. Grappling hooks were also effective tools for safely attaching lines for climbing up or rappelling down. This artifact remains in very nice condition, with no rust or chipping.
Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in sales.
