This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Shot Bag. It is made of leather with a hand-carved wooden cap and measures 7” x 3” wide. These bags were worn on the powder horn strap of the light infantryman, both American and British. They were used to carry shot which was loaded with the ball (“buck and ball”) to increase the effectiveness of the load.
There are examples of similar shot bags in NPS Revolutionary War Guilford Courthouse Museum and the Fort Ticonderoga museum (see pictures). Also, in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neuman & Kravic (see pictures). This hand-sewn shot bag is in very nice condition for being over 250 years old.
