Product Description

This is really a unique grouping being offered; there are six iron spikes, ranging from 10 ¾” – 2”. They were recovered years ago from the ruins of the Block House at Fort Plain, NY (see pictures).  The village of Fort Plain was originally named for a military outpost in the Revolutionary War. After the Battle of Oriskany in 1777, the Mohawk Valley was virtually defenseless. During 1779, Fort Plain was rebuilt into a strong military outpost.

While the site of Fort Plain has historical significance as a Revolutionary War fort, there are very few ruins remaining today. The original fort was built in 1776 and served as a valley headquarters for the American army. It was also known as Fort Rensselaer during parts of the war. Over time, the fort was either dismantled or deteriorated.

The grouping is very interesting and educational, showing the variety of spikes and nails needed for constructing forts and fortifications. This is exactly what they were using in the 1700s. They all have surface rust, but there is no flaking or chipping. Recently I made a visit to Fort Plain and there really isn’t too much there now, but they do have a nice museum. These interesting relics come in the glass top display case pictured.
