This is another rare piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War whistle. It is made of bone, and the overall length of the whistle is about 2 1/4” and 1” wide and the small ball (pea) is still in it. Whistles were often used by both officers and NCOs. They were easy to carry and could direct men without having to depend on other signals.
This is truly a nice piece and beautifully carved. There are examples in "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution", by Newmann and Kravic and in many Revolutionary War museums. I had a few early whistles in the past, but this is about as nice as they come. It does make a great addition as a personal item in any collection. It comes in the acrylic display case pictured.
