Revolutionary War era Horn Cup, as in museums and books

$125.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Horn Cup (Beaker). It measures 4” high with a diameter of 2 3/4” on the top and 2” on the bottom.  This one also has the rare very slight curved pouring spout on top.  In the 18th and 19th centuries, cattle provided an abundant supply of horns, which were light, strong, and waterproof. After the inner material was boiled out, they were scraped and even separated into layers for use.

This is the type that a soldier would have carried in his pouch or would have been used in any tavern in America. There are examples of this cup in Guilford Courthouse American Revolutionary War Museum and the American Freedom Museum in Texas, and the Ticonderoga Museum (see pictures).

Many of these horn cups develop cracks with age, however this one is void of any damage and has very nice coloring. In Early American Antiques, 1650 – 1800, by George Neumann, there are several examples shown (see pictures). This is a great Revolutionary War cup and would go great in a Revolutionary War soldier’s personal effects.

Throughout history, war has been a constant presence, shaping civilizations and societies. From the earliest days of humanity, conflict has persisted in various forms, and based on historical patterns, it is likely to continue in some manner. This ongoing reality has given rise to a deep fascination among historians and collectors who seek to understand the past through the tangible remnants left behind, i.e. uniforms, guns, swords, artillery.

While significant attention is given to weapons and military gear, the everyday items used by soldiers frequently go unnoticed. Simple objects like forks, spoons, cups, dishes, pots, and knives played an essential role in a soldier’s daily life. These items were as precious to the individual as their weapon, serving practical needs and providing comfort amidst the hardships of war. I myself have always appreciated their importance in showing a complete representation in a collection.   Bob
