Being offered is a Revolutionary War Dirk or Dagger. It measures 10” long and the blade is ¾” wide. It was recovered off a side road at Williamsburg, Virginia.
During the American Revolution, most firearms were supplied by the government, soldiers brought their own knives. American congress, provincial assemblies, and supply officers focused on stockpiling and issuing firearms. Iron was needed for cannon, muskets, and rifles, therefore other weapons, such as knives and swords, or necessaries, such as cooking utensils, were provided by the soldier.
There are examples of these type of knives are in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann and Kravic and an example at the Fort Plain Museum (see pictures). Although it has overall rust, it is in very solid condition and has been coated for preservation.
With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in the Revolutionary War and its relics is expected to significantly increase. This renewed enthusiasm will drive demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.
Already, I am witnessing a notable uptick in purchases of 18th century items, which reflects the growing anticipation for the anniversary and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
