This is one of those items that rarely become available; it is a “Brunswick” Belt Buckle. It is made of solid brass and measures 2 ¼” x 1 ¾”. These buckles are the type worn by the Dragoon Regiment of Prinz Ludwig from Brunswick, Germany, which is located in the present-day German state of Lower Saxony.
In 1777, the Burgoyne's army captured Crown Point and launched the siege of Ticonderoga from there. At the time the Prinz Ludwig Dragoon Regiment provided the personal guard to General Burgoyne. They were later almost entirely killed, wounded, or captured at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777. There is one of these buckles that was recovered at Crown Point, NY and is in the Ticonderoga Museum collection (see pictures).
This buckle remains in nice condition and was recovered in the Champlain Valley many years ago. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
