RARE - Unique carved Revolutionary War Whistle, as in books and museums

This is another neat piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War whistle. It was carved from a single piece of wood and measures 5” x 1” diameter.  What is both unique and unusual, the carver added a number of different size small holes to change the sound when blown through.

Whistles were often used by both officers and NCOs. They were easy to carry and could direct men without having to depend on other signals. There is almost an identical example in the Revolutionary War Guilford Courthouse Museum (see pictures).

This is truly a nice piece, and it actually still works. This is the first time I had a whistle like this, and the first one I have ever seen. There are examples in "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution", by Newmann and Kravic (see pictures). It does make a very nice personal item.

These items were as precious to the individual as their weapon, serving practical needs and providing comfort amidst the hardships of war.
