Rare late 18th – early 19th century lantern, with unique carrying handle (SOLD)

Product Description

I had quite a few antique lanterns in the past, but this one is unique and unusual. It measures 13” to the top of the carrying ring and has a diameter of 5” on the bottom. The handle extends out another 3”. The top cone is punched tin, and it has three rare mica windows.

Mica is a mineral, also known as "Muscovy glass," and was imported into England from Russia as early as the 16th century and used for lantern panes and windows on ships. Mica sheets are heat-resistant, thin, and translucent, providing a durable and unbreakable alternative to glass.

Something I had only seen once before is the cylinder carrying handle which also acts as an extra candle holder. I have added a period candle for display and put  a couple pieces of foam under it so it could be raised up and seen when displayed. This lantern dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century.

Lanterns were crucial for providing light after dark, allowing people to navigate safely outdoors. Officers had to have meetings and go over plans and maps, often in their tents, so a lantern was their only means of lighting. They were also extremely important to surgeons when treating the wounded soldiers. It would also be a great asset for a soldier going on guard duty or on a ship.

This lantern remains in very nice condition – there is a lot of melted wax on the inside which I think adds to its uniqueness but could be removed if desired.
