RARE – French & Indian War – Revolutionary War Cartridge Box

$485.00

Product Description

This is one of those cartridge boxes that seldom become available on the open market. It would be considered a “Belly Box” because of its slight oval shape. It measures 8 ½” x 3” x 1 ¾” and has a wooden insert for 8 cartridges. There is also five period brass tacks, three leather belt loops on the back, and a small leather closing strap (not attached). There are similar examples in "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" by Neumann & Kravic (see pictures).

In the early 1700s, having wooden inserts for multiple cartridges (up to 24) were not really needed, only a handful would be plenty. As the war progressed, the demand for carrying many cartridges was a necessity.

During Braddock’s Expedition in the French & Indian War, in June 1758, British officer Lt. Colonel Henry Bouquet, wrote: “I have noticed a great inconvenience in the use of cartridge boxes for the provincial troops. They do not know how to make cartridges, or rather, they take too much time. In the woods, they seldom have time or places suitable to make them. These cartridge boxes hold only 9 charges, some twelve, which is not sufficient. I think that their powder horns and pouches would be more useful, keeping the cartridge box, however, to use in case of a sudden or night attack.”

For its age, this cartridge box remains in nice condition – the outer cover opens, but it is a little stiff but tightly attached. This is out of a very old collection and the first time on the market. A similar cartridge box was taken from a British soldier in 1776 (see pictures).

With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in Revolutionary War relics is expected to significantly increase. This renewed enthusiasm will drive demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.

Already, I am witnessing a notable uptick in purchases of these items, which reflects the growing anticipation for the anniversary and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
