RARE - Civil War Artillery Limber Lock and chain with brass cover marked “US”

Being offered is a “US” marked padlock. It measures 2 ½” x 4 1/4” x ¾” and on the swivel brass keyhole cover is “US”. This one has the very seldom seen, original brass chain attached, measuring 6 ½” long. These locks would have been used in securing ammunition crates on the limber (see pictures). On the back is an old tag with “CIVIL WAR / ….Reg Jeffe…”.

I have had a couple of the “US” marked keyhole covers in the past, and recently a complete lock, but this is the first time I came across, or even seen, a complete lock with chain. The chain would keep the lock secured to the limber to prevent it from being lost. It remains in very solid condition, and the keyhole cover still easily opens and closes.
