This is another nice piece coming out of the large Gettysburg collection I acquired. It is the base of a Confederate Mullane shell. On these rare shells a center bolt and three pins holds the sabot in place. This relic came out of the prestigious collection of the late “Hap” Hazard. It was recovered many years ago from the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg.
At sunset on July 2, 1863, the Battle of East Cemetery Hill was fought when Confederate troops charged the hill’s artillery batteries. Federal soldiers took up firing positions amidst the cemetery tombstones, laying many of them on the ground and sheltering behind them to evade enemy fire. A counter-attack by soldiers hidden within the cemetery merged with additional Union forces to successfully drive the attackers back and prevent the cemetery from being taken.
Evergreen Cemetery experienced three days as an army camp and battlefield, after which its paths were trodden down, its fences were flattened, and many of its iron-fenced burial plots and larger monuments were damaged and destroyed. It is very rare to acquire anything from Evergreen Cemetery. I discuss it in further detail in my book “Battle of Gettysburg – The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs” (see pictures).
This piece is rare by itself, but coming from Gettysburg and the Evergreen Cemetery, makes it very desirable. It is just as found and comes in the acrylic display case pictured. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and a letter from Hap’s wife when she originally sold it.
