Out of Stock

$95.00

Product Description

This is another nice pair of items being offered, they are brass toe plates off of a Civil War soldiers brogans or boots. What is rare is that one is marked with “[P]AT NOV 29, 1859”. They were recovered many years ago from the Gettysburg Battlefield. There are toe taps in the Gettysburg NPS Museum collection (see pictures).

These brass pieces were put on the heels and toes of shoes to help prevent them from wearing out. You can still see the nail holes from the small nails that held them on. Being iron, the nail heads rusted away until the plates fell off. They have been in my private collection for many years, and I have included them in my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items” on page 30. They come in the glass top display case pictured.
