Original Revolutionary War Powder Horn, ca. 1750 – 1785 (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$125.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Powder Horn. It measures approximately 7 1/2” x 2” and still has the thin cord attached. During the American Revolutionary War, the powder horn was essential for any soldier who used a firearm, both American and British. The rifleman carried his firelock, hunting pouch, and a horn to carry the gunpowder.

Powder horns were generally created from cow, ox, or buffalo horn. To close off the wider open end, there are metal tacks to hold the dome wood closure. The opposite end has the carved plug with string still attached.

This powder horn shows honest use but remains in very nice condition – there are no cracks in the horn, which is seen quite often. There are similar examples of this horn in “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by Neumann & Kravic (see pictures).
