This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Revolutionary War Powder Horn. It measures approximately 2 1/2” x 16” and has a thin leather cord attached. During the Revolutionary War, the powder horn was essential equipment for any soldier who used a firearm. The rifleman carried his firelock, hunting pouch, and a horn to carry the gunpowder.
Powder horns were generally created from cow, ox, or buffalo horn. To close off the wider end, there are tiny metal tacks fastened to the wooden block. The smaller end has a small wooden stopper to keep it from spilling.
This powder horn shows honest use but remains in very nice condition – there are no cracks in the horn, which is seen quite often. There are similar examples of this horn in “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” (see pictures).
With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in Revolutionary War relics is expected to significantly increase. This renewed enthusiasm will drive demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.
Already, I am witnessing a notable uptick in purchases of these items, which reflects the growing anticipation for the anniversary and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
