Product Description

Civil War Poem. This interesting piece is titled “Soldier’s Tear” and was published by James Gates, Cincinnati. It is printed in red on thin paper and measures 7 ¾” x 4 ½”. The picture on the top has two women with a triangle between them with “Love, Purity and Fidelity”. I am not positive but this may have something to do with the Temperance League.

The moving piece is about a soldier going off to war and the feelings a couple have as they are departing. One part states “He turn’d and left the spot – O! do not deem him weak – For dauntless was the soldier’s heart, though tears were on his cheek…..”

This is a touching poem which has several folds indicating someone carried it with them, perhaps a soldier given to him by a loved one. This rare surviving example would look great framed.
