Original Civil War 12-pounder Cannon Shell Powder Bag (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$145.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an Original Civil War 12-pounder Cannon Shell Powder Bag, measuring 16" x 7 ½” in overall size. These bags would have been filled with powder and tied on to the back of an artillery shell (see pictures). The bag was punctured by the priming wire, and a friction primer was inserted in the vent to allow the transfer of the spark to ignite the charge.

The majority of these bags were used up during the war or discarded when they were no longer needed after the war, therefore, not many of them survive today. This one is in excellent condition as you can see in the images. This is the pattern that was designed to be used on a cannon with a 4.62-inch diameter which is better known as a 12-pounder. A wonderful and still affordable piece of Civil War artillery history for your relic room. It could be display flat or filled with cotton or fiber for displaying.
