Original CDV image of General Robert E. Lee – famous E. & H.T. Anthony backmark

Product Description

This is another great piece being offered, it is an authentic CDV image of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It is a nice clear view of the general in his Confederate Civil War uniform. It shows the stately looking Lee with the General Stars on his collar. It has the famous backmark of “E. & H.T. Anthony”, from their 501 Broadway, NY address.

Edward and Henry T. Anthony were brothers as well as photographic partners. In 1847 Edward began to collaborate with his older brother Henry, photographing and publishing carte-de-visite (CDVs) and stereographic views. Together they founded the firm of E. and H.T. Anthony in New York in 1852, which was unquestionably the period's leading manufacturer and marketer of photographic supplies and equipment.

The Anthonys provided financial support to the famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady to photograph the Civil War and in return Brady gave them all of his duplicate high-quality negatives. They specialized in images of Civil War Generals, Congressmen, Senators, and other Civil War era notables.

General Lee served with distinction in every post that he ever held. To this day, he is the only man to graduate West Point Military Academy without getting a single demerit. Lee was offered the Command of the Union forces but declined the position so he could fight with his home state of Virginia and the Confederacy. This is an excellent original Civil War image of General Lee – very difficult to find with this quality and clarity.
