Being offered is a great Civil War artifact. it is the Model 1858 “Bullseye” Union canteen. It is complete with the original brown cover, leather strap and stopper. Also, marked on the pewter spout is “Hadden, Porter & Booth, Phila”. They were a major Philadelphia manufacturer that produced thousands of the iconic Model 1858 "Bullseye" tin canteens for the Union Army during the Civil War.
These canteens featured the circular, 3-pint tinned sheet iron body with the concentric rings (corrugations) designed to prevent denting and add structural strength. “In my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition”, I show quite a few of these canteens, along with all the other ones. A famous period photograph shows a dead Union soldier with his Bullseye canteen next to him (see pictures).
This is the perfect canteen for the Civil War collector – it has just about everything needed for a great presentation piece. It shows the signs of being well used, not a surplus example. I have over 250 canteens in my personal collection, and this one rivals just about all my Bullseye models.
