Product Description

This is a 1764 Dutch East Indies (VOC) 1 Duit coin, minted by the Dutch East India Company.  It features the prominent "VOC" monogram, representing the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, and measures 21mm.

These copper coins were used as currency for trade in Asia, specifically in the Dutch East Indies. They are widely known in numismatic circles as "New York Pennies" due to their use in Dutch American colonies.

Duit coins were in circulation during the Revolutionary War. While they were minted by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for use in colonies like Indonesia, they widely circulated in North America due to a severe shortage of small change. They remained in use in the former Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (New York) long afterwards.
