Musket Wiper (Worm) gun tool for a Model 1841 musket, dug Antietam (SOLD)

This is another interesting piece being offered, it is an original Musket Wiper (Worm) gun tool for a Civil War musket. It has the long iron shaft, approximately 3”, and the bottom is threaded to fit the ramrod. They were used to remove jammed bullets and paper from the barrel. This one was recovered years ago on the Antietam Battlefield.

The Battle of Antietam would become the single bloodiest day of the American Civil War and all of American military history, seeing nearly 23,000 casualties. The inconclusive but strategic Union victory, politically enabled Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

It is rare to find dug examples of these wipers, usually only recovered in the earlier battlefields, such as Antietam. By the start of the Civil War, these guns were basically obsolete, only being used by Confederates out of necessity. This is a very solid piece and comes in the acrylic display case pictured.
