Being offered is a rare, French & Indian War through the Revolutionary War, French Model 1754 socket bayonet. It has most of its original leather scabbard with hanger. It has an overall length of 17 ¾” with the blade being 14”. The French Model 1754 Socket Bayonet has a triangular-blade and was designed primarily for use with French Charleville flintlock muskets
The Model 1754 pattern musket saw its greatest use in America during the Revolution. The significant improvement of previous bayonets was the introduction of a third step to the stud mortise, improving retention of the bayonet on the barrel.
This model bayonet could also be used on the 1728 and 1746 muskets. They were widely used by the French troops during the French and Indian War and even later, until the French Revolutionary War when all the available weapons were put to use.
These bayonets are rare but do show up from time to time, however, it is very seldom to have its original scabbard, even though it is only partial – there are no visible markings. This is a nice example with a good edge and point.
With the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding this year, interest in the Revolutionary War and its relics are significantly increasing. This renewed enthusiasm is driving the demand for virtually all Revolutionary War artifacts, further contributing to their scarcity and rising prices.
I am witnessing a notable increase in purchases of these items, which reflects the growing celebrations for the anniversary and the heightened value of Revolutionary War memorabilia.
