Being offered is another interesting piece, it is an early 19th century tin candle stick, ca. 1810 - 1860. It stands 8 ¾” high with a 5” diameter at the base. It is complete with the chair hanger and push-up candle adjuster. This particular style is referred to as a “Wedding Band Candlestick”, being that in the center is a brass iron band, resembling a wedding band.
The brass ring was put into the middle of the shaft not only to make it a little classier, but it also reflected the candlelight with a glow. They were also relatively expensive when they were new, so few ordinary households had them.
There is an interesting story concerning one of these candle sticks. In the “Beyond the Battle Museum” in Gettysburg, there is one of these candlesticks on display. The description states “This candle lit the room while craftsmen hammered together Jennie Wade’s coffin at the woodworking shop of Daniel Culp on Baltimore Street” (see pictures). Jennie was the only civilian killed at the battle of Gettysburg, while making bread for soldiers.
Overall, this piece is solid with only some very slight surface rust. It would make a nice addition to any early collection.
