This is another nice item being offered, it is a tin lantern measuring 11” high x 4” wide, circa 1830 - 1860. There are four glass windows, each with two tin bars to protect the glass. The door opens with a crude turn-key and the inside has a tin candle holder, secured at the bottom with the very early turned tin tabs. The upper part of the lantern has a crude design with a hanging ring on top.
It does appear that it was originally painted silver, but now it is worn and there is some surface rust but nowhere rusted through. As typical with these early lanterns, some of the glass may have been replaced. These lanterns are often seen in period photographs of camp scenes. This lantern would look great in a Civil War camp scene.
