Being offered is a great looking excavated Confederate Script “I” button. It measures 23mm and has the backmark “S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & Co / LONDON / 71 JERMYN. ST”. It has a tight standup shank and the backmark is very clear. These buttons were imported from England for the Confederacy. It was recovered at Amelia, Virginia.
Amelia Court House was a critical, though brief, stop for Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in April 1865, as they attempted to reunite after the fall of Richmond and Petersburg, but the failure to find expected food supplies at the train depot led to a delay and the eventual loss of the battle at Sayler's Creek. The county itself was also a site for skirmishes, including the Battle of Namozine Church and Battle of Amelia Springs, as Union forces pursued the retreating Confederates.
This is one of the nicer Script “I” buttons that I seen in quite a while. Everything is tight and it has a great untouched patina on the face. It would go very well with any Civil War collection. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
