Being offered is a half-case Civil War soldier Tintype. It is a quarter-plate tintype measuring 3.25” x 4.25”. The full-standing soldier wears his sack coat, tinted blue trousers, brogans and kepi, along with having rose tinted cheeks. The back drop shows a camp scene with tents in a field.
Tintypes were enormously popular and reached their peak era of use during the conflict. Costing as little as twenty-five cents, these lightweight, durable images on thin iron plates allowed soldiers to easily mail or carry personal portraits for loved ones back home.
Unlike fragile glass ambrotypes or heavy daguerreotypes, tintypes resisted cracking and breaking. Their affordability made portraits accessible to ordinary enlisted men, not just officers or the wealthy.
I had this image for many years, and it is clear with the young soldier looking directly into the camera.
