Civil War Officers Spy Glass (telescope), as in museums

$165.00

Product Description

This is another nice item piece being offered, it is a three-draw Civil War “Spy Glass” telescope. It is made of brass and measures 17 1/2” when it is fully opened, when closed 6 1/4” x 1 ¼”. It is void of any markings, which is typical and correct for the era. In the "National Civil War Museum" in Harrisburg, PA, there is an example of this telescope (see pictures).

Telescopes such as these were an important tool of the artillery, Engineers, Cavalry and Field officers. The size was ideal for carrying in a haversack or coat pocket. In “Civil War Artifacts”, by Howard Crouch, there is a similar example that was excavated in Fredericksburg (see pictures). There are also examples in the NPS Gettysburg Museum (see pictures).

The outside has a very unique hand-sewn cover, with a few dark stains.  The glass at both ends appears to be in excellent shape along with the optics. The tiny dust-cover on the small end opens and closes. No doubt this telescope was used, but overall, a solid piece and in nice condition. It would fit in well with an officer’s, artillery, or cavalry display.
