Civil War leather Shot Pouch, marked “AR”, possibly Arkansas

$135.00

Product Description

This powder flask is made of hand-sewn brown leather, measuring 5” x 2 ½” x 1”. Nicely carved into one side of the leather are the letters “A R” and the original stopper appears that it may be lead.

I believe that the initials stand for Arkansas. If it was a soldier’s initials there would probably be a period or an X between the letters. The flask would have contained and dispersed small lead shot, or gun-powder for muskets.  Made from two-pieces of leather sewn together to form an elongated oval.

Arkansas played a significant, albeit complex, role in the Civil War. While the state ultimately seceded and joined the Confederacy, divisions within Arkansas were apparent, with some citizens supporting the Union. Arkansas contributed troops to both sides, though the majority served the Confederacy, particularly in the Western Theater. The state saw several key battles and experienced the war's impact on its civilian population, including partisan warfare and divided loyalties.

This unique flask remains in very nice condition, with no real separations and the leather clean and tight. It would make an excellent addition alongside a period firearm.
