Civil War era Crockery Inkwell (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$25.00

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War era pottery inkwell. It is made of brown pottery. It measures approximately 3” high and the diameter at the base is 2 ½”. There is a slight glaze, but the bottom is un-glazed. There was a rapid increase in the consumption of ink during the Civil War, accompanied by the required bottles and inkwells to store the ink.

In the mid-1800's, excluding slaves, the population of the United States enjoyed having one of the highest literacy levels in the world.  In my book "The Civil War Soldier - His Personal Items", I go into more detail on the importance of letter writing. Examples of these inkwells are in most of the relic books. This inkwell is in very nice condition, with no chips or cracks. A nice display piece when used along side a period letter and pen.
