Civil War era Ambrotype image of a young woman

$65.00

Product Description

Being offered is a 1/6th plate ambrotype image is of a young woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress. She is posed standing full length in front of the camera. She appears to be wearing a bracelet and brooch, highlighted in gold gilt. She also appears to be wearing a hoop or several petticoats , giving her dress the desired bell-shaped form of the era.

A 6th plate ambrotype is a mid-19th-century photograph that measures roughly 2.75" by 3.25". It consists of a glass negative placed over a dark background to create a positive image. These photographs were highly popular between the mid-1850s and the 1860s.

During the Civil War, when a young man left home to serve,  women would usually get their image taken to give their husband or beau to take with him. They were also sent by mail to him either in the CDV form or ambrotype. Evidence of this is verified by remnants of them recovered from campsites and battlefields.

The one here is typical of what a soldier would end up cherishing when away at war. It is in half-case and there are no cracks. They always go great with a display of a soldier’s personal effects.
