Recently, I was fortunate enough to acquire an extensive collection of canteens, rundlets, kegs, and water/liquor flasks. These artifacts span a significant period dating from the early 1700s through the Civil War.
The one being offered here is a Confederate Tin Drum canteen, this is the style which was being produced in the southern states for the Confederacy. It has a 7 ¾” diameter with a tin spout ¾” high and a diameter of 7/8”. It has two sling loops with what appears to be the original cord sling (a similar one is seen in a period picture).
Although there were variations in sizes and sling loops, what seemed to be a constant was just about all had ring designs – some larger and others smaller, even some having multiple rings.
In all of the canteen books, there are examples of this style of canteen – Mike O’Donnell’s, Sylvia & O’Donnell, and even in my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition” (see pictures). Overall, this is a solid Confederate canteen – it shows typical use with minor dents, but no rust.
