Civil War Confederate Georgia button recovered at the Antietam Battlefield

$185.00

Product Description

Being offered is a Confederate Georgia coat button, measuring 23mm. As expected, the face of this button shows wear, its design of three pillars supporting an arch, bearing the word "Constitution" and banners wrapping the pillars have the three words, "Wisdom", "Justice", and "Moderation" but the lettering can’t really be made out. The back still has the upright shank with a blank depressed channel. This button was recovered many years ago at the Antietam Battlefield.

At the Battle of Antietam, several Georgia infantry regiments were present, including the 15th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 2nd, and 50th Georgia Regiments. These regiments were part of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and participated in the fighting.

The Battle of Antietam, the deadliest single-day battle in American history, resulted in approximately 22,720 casualties, including soldiers killed, wounded, or missing. The Union suffered 12,400 casualties, while the Confederacy experienced 10,320 casualties. This translates to roughly 25% of the Union forces and 31% of the Confederate forces being lost in the battle.

This button is in very nice shape for being underground for well over 100 years. It comes in the glass top display case pictured. It is a great piece of Civil War history.
