This is truly a unique piece being offered, it is the brass mouthpiece from a Civil War bugle. It measures 2 1/2” long x 1” wide with an untouched patina. It was found years ago at the Antietam Battlefield.
The Battle of Antietam, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South, was fought on September 17, 1862. This was the first major battle in the Civil War to take place on Union soil. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with a combined tally of dead, wounded, and missing at 22,717.
Civil War Buglers were highly respected and always in demand and there were a lot fewer of them than drummers and fifers. There are bugle mouth pieces in just about all of the Civil War dug artifacts books. In the recent book “Groundbreakers”, by Steve Sylvia, there is a very similar example of this mouthpiece (see pictures). This artifact is in very nice condition and is just as found, only the dirt cleaned off. It comes in the acrylic display case pictured. No one will ever know if this bugler survived the battle.
