Civil War black leather holster for a revolver

Being offered is an early-war holster for a .36 caliber revolver with full military flap, wide belt loop, secured by stitching and three rivets. It does not have a toe plug, which was very common with these holsters. These have often been pushed out by the muzzle of the pistol. The brass closure finial is still present, but the leather latch tab is gone, either intentional or from use. With the flap closed it measures 12 ¾” x 7 ½” wide.

Civil War cavalrymen were typically armed with saber, pistol, and carbine, though it took some time to get regiments fully armed with carbines. This would be a key part of a cavalry display, nicely completing a cavalry belt rig, and look great alongside a revolver.

The stitching is tight and the leather has good body, not hard and not flimsy. It shows the typical wear of a holster that was well used with a couple of small spots worn through. This is an honest military issue holster that seen action, not a surplus piece. It has a nice untouched look, not having been treated with any dressing or preservatives.
