19th century hand-carved pipe with Eagle Claws

$285.00

Product Description

This is really a beautiful piece being offered, it is a 19th century hand-carved Meerschaum pipe. The bowl measures 3 ½” x 2 ½” x 2” and the gutta-percha stem extends 3”. Very intricately carved are four eagle talons which appear to be grasping an egg. Something that an eagle would do when invading a nest.

The first pipe recorded using meerschaum was created in 1723 by a shoemaker in Budapest. He discovered that meerschaum is highly absorbent, and he repeatedly dosed it in water to make it more pliable while carving. The experiment proved successful, and the first meerschaum pipe was created.

They were popular in the 19th century, particularly among affluent smokers, due to their unique properties and elaborate carvings. Made from the mineral sepiolite, these pipes were prized for their ability to absorb moisture and change color as they were smoked, developing rich patinas of browns, yellows, and oranges. The popularity of meerschaum pipes in the 19th century was also driven by the craftsmanship of skilled carvers who created intricate designs on the bowls, featuring detailed figures, animals, and landscapes.

The claw motif, often resembling an eagle or dragon claw, added to the pipe's aesthetic appeal and symbolic meaning, making it a desirable item for those who appreciated craftsmanship and artistry.

This pipe is in very nice condition with no cracks. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into detail on the smoking habits of Civil War soldiers and show several pipes (see pictures).
