Seated Liberty Silver Quarter dated "1861" (SOLD)

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a U.S. 1861 Seated Liberty Quarter – the start of the Civil War. The obverse has Seated Liberty with the date "1861" below and the reverse has an eagle with arrows in talons and the value below. A common practice for soldiers was to make a hole in the coin for sewing to their clothing or to put a string through it for safe keeping.

The 1861 U.S. coins are very collectible because of their significance to the Civil War. Most soldiers left home to go off to war with these coins in their pocket. In my recent book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into more detail on this subject (see pictures). This coin has been well circulated, but the "1861" date remains very strong. They really go well with a display of a soldier’s personal effects. FREE SHIPPING
