Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is a war-time CDV image of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He is in uniform with the General stars on his collar. Lee served with distinction in every post that he ever held. To this day, he is the only man to graduate West Point Military Academy without getting a single demerit. Lee was offered the Command of the Union forces but declined the position so he could fight with his home state of Virginia and the Confederacy.

The backmark on the card is “C.D. Fredricks & Co. / 587 Broadway, New York” (see pictures). The Fredricks' Photographic Gallery, 585 and 587 Broadway, was the most popular photographic studio in New York before and during the Civil War.

There is some scattered age toning on the card, but Lee’s face and uniform are clear.  This is one of three views of General Lee believed to have been taken “In The Field” sometime between September, 1862, and May, 1863.
