Very early forged iron spike Candle Holder

$95.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a forged iron Candle Holder, circa late 18th to early 19th century. It could be stuck into a tree, beam or hung on a chair slat. It is made of forged iron and the lighting device is 7 1/2” long.

They were generally hand forged and made by the local blacksmith and were quite common everyday items in early America. Most early and mid-19th century households had several of these candle holders. They were small, so many men would take one with them when they went off to war. This one is in solid condition with slight surface rust and a trace of original red paint. I discuss the importance of lighting in my recent book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”.
