U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket Gun Tool, recovered behind Little Round Top, Gettysburg (ON HOLD,M)

Out of Stock

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is an excavated gun tool. It was used with the U.S. Model 1861 Rifle musket, having an open-ended nipple wrench with an additional screwdriver blade for this musket. They were widely issued with Springfield and contract manufactured Model 1861s and stored in the implement pouch of the cartridge box. The tool was found behind Little Round Top, just off Taneytown Road (see map).

The areas behind the Round Tops were used as temporary hospital sites during and after the battle. Perhaps this tool was dropped by a wounded soldier. It shows the typical signs of being in the dirt for many years, however it remains a very solid piece – no chipping or flaking. A light coat of varnish was applied for preservation. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
