Two Civil War Artillery 4-second fuses

$35.00

Product Description

This is another nice Civil War Artillery item being offered, it is two 4-second fuses, and they are marked as such. These fuses had a powder composition, wrapped tightly in paper and pre-cut at the factory to determine the time before explosion. It was driven into a metal or wood fuze plug mounted in the fuse hole of the projectile.

The packages for these paper fuses were color-coded to their distinct burning times. The Union ordnance department decreed that only the Frankfort Arsenal would manufacture paper fuses, in order to ensure a uniform product. The Confederate ordnance bureau could not afford this luxury, and the unreliability of their fuses, in comparison to their Union counterparts, was a regular source of frustration to the Confederate artillerymen.

In my book "Civil War Artillery - A Pictorial Introduction", I go into more detail on Artillery fuses (see pictures). These fuses are complete and come in the glass top display case pictured. They would go great with any Civil War or Artillery collection.
