Toggle Chain with Key, dug at Murfreesboro

Product Description

This is another neat little piece being offered, it is a key attached to two links of chain. The overall length is about 6 ½” long. As per the attached string tag, it is marked as an Artillery Caisson lock on one side and Toggle Chain with key, Murfreesboro on the other. This piece was recovered many years ago from the Murfreesboro, TN battlefield.

The Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) was fought from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, in Middle Tennessee, as the culmination of the Stones River Campaign in the Western Theater. Of the major battles of the war, Murfreesboro had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides.

This is an unusual item being attached to the chain. I’ve come across many keys and sections of chain, but not this setup. It was probably done so the key wouldn’t be lost, however it appears that didn’t help.
